Leica is a contraction or portmanteau of 'Leitz Camera'. The logo is based on on the camera manufacturer's signature; Ernst Leitz II. In the 1920s the Leitz Camera was already called Leica. It took until mid 1980s until the signature part of the logo changed from Leitz to Leica.
